The former Chengalpattu District, which was renamed Chengalpattu-MGR/Kancheepuram at the time of the 1991 Census, has been divided into the District of Tiruvallur. According to the aforementioned split, Ponneri and Gummindipoondi taluks of Chengalpattu District as well as Tiruvallur, Tiruttani, and Uthukkottai sub-taluks of Saidapet revenue division separated from Chengalpattu District and created this new District.
