This was the first time a Dean for Research had ever been appointed anywhere in the IIT system. The first Dean of Research & Development was appointed as Prof. H. K. Kesavan from the Electrical Engineering department. But in 1971, a standalone R&D unit was established with only four employees. The R&D office currently employs roughly 55 people, including regular and project workers, and processes paperwork pertaining to purchases, travel, appointments, and salaries in addition to managing the individual accounts of over 700 projects at any given time.

A good knowledge of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and hydrology. Candidates having experience in field experiments and having worked with microcontrollers will be given preference.
